Dr. Edwin Smith is a board-certified urologist specializing in the practice of pediatric urology. A native Georgian from Statesboro, he is a graduate of Davidson College. He received his medical degree at Emory University School of Medicine. His general surgery internship and urology residency were completed at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals. As a chief resident, he was the first recipient of the William H. Cooner Award for compassion and excellence in patient care.

Dr. Smith completed a two-year postgraduate fellowship in pediatric urology at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He has been involved in resident teaching throughout his career and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at Emory University School of Medicine. He served for 16 years as the Program Director for the Emory Fellowship Program in Pediatric Urology and he has been a recipient of the Emory Resident Teaching Award.

As a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he served on the Executive Committee Section of Pediatric Urology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of several professional medical associations including the American Urological Association, Society for Pediatric Urology, and the Society for Fetal Urology. At Children’s Hospital of Atlanta he has enjoyed involvement in medical staff affairs serving on committees that emphasize patient safety and quality of care including Credentials Committee, Bylaws Committee, Physician’s Health Committee and leadership roles as Co-Chair of the System Professional Performance Evaluation Committee, Director of the Department of Operative Services at Egleston Hospital, and he is a past President of the Professional Staff of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Currently, Dr. Smith is the Section Chief for Pediatric Urology at Egleston Hospital. He is a member of the Pelvic and Anorectal Care Clinic (PARC) and Spina Bifida Clinic at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

He has published over 75 scientific articles and book chapters and has a special interest in complex pediatric genitourinary reconstructive surgery including management of neurogenic bladder dysfunction, prune belly syndrome, bladder exstrophy, hypospadias and hydronephrosis. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Urology and the Journal of Pediatric Urology.

He is a multiyear recipient of the Castle Connolly Top Doctors award. Dr. Smith has led a pediatric urology medical mission trip to El Salvador annually for the past 17 years. Outside of pediatric urology he enjoys spending time with his family and outdoor sports especially hiking and fishing.
