Focal high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a less invasive option for qualifying patients who have unilateral intermediate-grade prostate cancer. It is an alternative to radical prostatectomy and radiation. Focal HIFU can target a focused area of the prostate sparing normal tissue. This reduces damage to surrounding structures like blood vessels and nerves which are important in men’s sexual health and urinary function.
Radical prostatectomy and radiation are more likely to cause reductions in erectile function and increase the risk of urinary dysfunction. In the well-selected patient, HIFU offers salvage-free survival of approximately 89% after 2.5 years.¹ Focal HIFU allows other therapies to be performed in the future should they be necessary.
Whole Prostate Gland Therapy May Be Necessary
Prostate cancer can have a wide spectrum of outcomes. There is a subset of men with non-aggressive prostate cancer who can follow an active surveillance strategy. Others are good candidates for localized focal therapy with HIFU. Unfortunately, other subsets of men may require more aggressive whole prostate gland interventions with surgery or radiation. Multi-modal therapy (combination of multiple interventions) may be required in the most severe cases. These more aggressive interventions are related to higher levels of toxicity and side effects.
Choosing a Qualified Urologist and Practice
Urologists offer a range of prostate cancer treatment options, including surveillance, immunotherapy, NanoKnife, HIFU, and radical prostatectomy. Our team works closely with primary care physicians, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists, to best understand your needs and tailor a treatment option that is best for you.
It is important to participate in prostate cancer screening. Early detection can significantly reduce the severity of prostate cancer, increase your options for cure, and diminish effects on your quality of life. Certain groups have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer and should seek medical evaluation at a younger age; men of African descent and men with a family history of prostate or breast cancer. Talk to your urologist today about your risks. The physicians at Georgia Urology would be happy to discuss your options.
