Leading Atlanta urologist, Dr. Walter Falconer, participated in event featuring Q&A sessions, complimentary screenings, and more
Georgia Urology, the largest urology practice in the Southeast, continued its tradition of bolstering prostate cancer awareness by serving as co-sponsor of Bayer Presents Community Conversation on Prostate Cancer Featuring Men Who Speak Up. This free-to-the-public event took place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 30 at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church (2340 Clifton Springs Road, Decatur). Approximately 190 men were in attendance and received complimentary screenings that began at 11:30 a.m. and continued until 2 p.m.
“Our strategy against prostate cancer begins with awareness,” Dr. Falconer said. “Arguably, there’s no better way to do so than to venture into the community and meet those susceptible to the disease where they’re at.”
Dr. Falconer and Dr. James Benton from Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia took turns sharing their knowledge with guests. Topics ranged from the definition, diagnosis, prevalence, latest research, and symptoms of the disease to an overview of prostate cancer treatments. Dr. Falconer spoke on prostate cancer in the African-American community and the importance of early detection. Upon the conclusion of their speeches, both specialists answered questions from the audience.
Georgia Urology hosted free prostate cancer screenings at the event for men ages 40 and older and those with a family history of prostate cancer. A volunteer staff and Dr. Barry Zisholtz from Georgia Urology were on hand conducting the screenings. Georgia Urology physicians recommend that when men reach age 40, they consider a prostate cancer screening with a PSA test. Statistics reveal that one in six men will be affected by prostate cancer in their lifetime.
