Dr. Belew also took questions from callers and discussed his inspiration for entering into the field of urology, after majoring in Business Administration as an undergraduate student and later receiving his Master’s in Accountancy. “In urology, patients can see life-changing results. In many cases, they can become more active, they can get out of the house, and they can spend more time with their family. Playing a part in that keeps me passionate about my work,” said Dr. Belew.
During the show, Dr. Belew and Dr. Bruce Feinberg highlighted the importance of kidney stone risk assessment and prevention, especially as we begin to enter the warmer months when kidney stones become more prevalent. “Stones are much more common as we get older. Adults can see them as early as their late 20s and early 30s. And although rare, they can form in children,” Dr. Belew explained on the show.
Though genetics play a role in risk assessment for kidney stones, everyone should take preventative measures to avoid the development of stones. During the show, Dr. Belew outlined several lifestyle interventions people can take that are extremely effective in preventing kidney stones. These included increasing our everyday hydration and consuming a low salt and animal protein diet.
A native of Georgia, Dr. Belew received his undergraduate and Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He then later received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, where he also completed his general surgery internship and urology residency. He is a member of several professional organizations including the Medical Association of Georgia; the American Urological Association; and the Rinker-Witherington Urologic Society.
At Georgia Urology, Dr. Belew sees patients at our Roswell and Cumming office locations, specializing in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney stones, prostate cancer, and performing robotic surgeries.
