Dr. Vahan Kassabian’s patient shares his story with 11Alive
Georgia Urology’s Dr. Vahan Kassabian was recently featured on 11Alive for performing Georgia’s first HIFU prostate cancer treatment.
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) uses strong, focused ultrasound waves to pinpoint and destroy cancerous tissue, while still preserving the prostate and surrounding organs. This groundbreaking method greatly reduces the risk of common side effects associated with other prostate cancer treatment methods, including sexual and urinary dysfunction.
“It’s truly a minimally invasive procedure that gets rid of the prostate cancer while preserving the important functions,” Dr. Kassabian said.
Rollins Snider, 69, was the first patient to undergo HIFU treatment in Georgia. He was first drawn to the procedure because of the minimized side effects. After watching his brother suffer through chemotherapy and radiation, he knew how difficult cancer treatment could be. He also looked forward to a short recovery time; most HIFU patients are back to work in just a few days.
While HIFU was just recently FDA approved, it has been available outside the U.S. for over ten years. Previously, Dr. Kassabian would travel to Canada and other HIFU-approved countries to perform the treatment for his patients. Dr. Kassabian is the only Atlanta area expert in the HIFU procedure.
