Hydronephrosis (from the Greek hydro meaning “water” and nephros meaning “kidney”) is a condition characterized by the buildup of urine within the kidney’s drainage system, specifically the calyces and renal pelvis (refer to the anatomy section). This accumulation can result from a blockage in the normal flow of urine or from urine flowing backward from the bladder—a condition known as reflux.
