Minimally Invasive Solutions for Enlarged Prostate (BPH)
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is common in men over 50 and causes:
Frequent urination, especially at night
Sudden urges to urinate and incomplete emptying of the bladder
Lifestyle changes to stay near bathrooms
Many men wait years to seek help. But treatment can dramatically improve your quality of life and lead to no more missed events or constant planning around bathrooms.
What Is PAE?
Prostatic artery embolization is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. The procedure works by blocking the blood flow to the prostate gland, causing it to shrink over time and making it easier for the patient to urinate.
PAE is designed to:
Reduce the blood supply to the prostate, which usually shrinks the prostate size by approximately 20–30%
Be minimally invasive. It’s performed by inserting a tiny catheter in the groin or wrist
Be performed in an outpatient setting by an interventional radiologist
Provide relief without the need for surgical excision or removal of tissue
How Does PAE Block Blood Flow to the Prostate?
Interventional Radiologist Guidance: An interventional radiologist uses X-ray guidance to insert a thin, flexible catheter (a small tube) into an artery, usually in the groin or wrist.
Targeting Prostate Arteries: The catheter is guided through the blood vessels to reach the arteries that supply blood to the prostate.
Embolic Agent Injection: Tiny particles (embolic agents) are injected through the catheter into the prostate arteries. These particles block the blood flow to the prostate.
Prostate Shrinkage: The reduced blood supply causes the prostate to shrink, relieving pressure on the urethra and improving urinary symptoms.
Outpatient Procedure: PAE is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you can usually go home the same day.
