Risk Factors For Prostate Cancer

You are at a higher risk for prostate cancer if:

  • You are African-American
  • You are over 50 years of age
  • You have one or more first-degree relatives (father or brother) who have had prostate cancer
  • You eat large amounts of red meat

Testing for Prostate Cancer

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) can be easily detected in your blood with a simple blood test. With proper interpretation by an experienced urologist, we can stratify your risk for prostate cancer and order further testing if necessary.

Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)
In this quick test, your physician will physically examine your prostate, allowing them to feel for any irregularities in its size, shape, or texture.

Prostate Cancer Is Treatable

The earlier prostate cancer is detected, the more treatment options will be available to you. Based on the prostate cancer grade and stage, your age, overall health status, and personal lifestyle, your urologist will discuss treatment options with you. Some prostate cancers do not even need to be initially treated and can be safely monitored for an extended period. Local prostate cancers have a 100% 5 year survival while distant (later stage) prostate cancers have less than half that.

Here are some treatment approaches to prostate cancer and you can contact us to learn more about them:
