Bulkamid is a quick, 10-minute procedure usually done in the office under local anesthesia with some nitrous oxide (aka laughing gas). We inject Bulkamid into the walls of the urethra to bulk tissues up, increasing resistance against leakage. The results are immediate, and there are essentially no restrictions afterward aside from avoiding sexual activity for a week.
Urethral Bulking With Bulkamid
Bulkamid is a gel-like substance of 97% water and 3% polyacrylamide. Unlike older bulking agents, Bulkamid does not migrate or disappear over time. In Europe, where mesh slings have been removed from the market, Bulkamid has been used for nearly a decade, and patients treated eight years ago continue to experience relief, although some may require additional treatment.
With Bulkamid, the number of female slings we’ve had to perform has significantly decreased. Most patients are thrilled with the results.
What percentage of your patients have needed further attention after this procedure?
Results can last almost a decade, and the percentage of patients needing further attention is very low.
Is there an age restriction?
Bulkamid urethral bulking has not been tested for safety or effectiveness in anyone under 18 years old.
What is Bulkamid made of?
It’s made mostly of water (97.5%) combined with a small amount (2.5%) of cross-linked polyacrylamide, a material that stays in place and is safe for the body. The gel doesn’t break down, move around, or get absorbed, and it’s sterilized to ensure it’s safe for injection.
Will it cause UTIs?
No, Bulkamid does not increase the risk of UTIs.
How do you differentiate between stress incontinence and an overactive bladder?
Stress incontinence occurs with physical activity, while overactive bladder involves frequent urination, urgency, and potential leakage.
Can I have this procedure done if I’ve already had a sling?
Yes, it is safe to do so.
Do you need someone to drive you?
If done in-office with nitrous oxide, no driver is needed. If performed in a hospital setting with anesthesia, a driver is required.
How long does Bulkamid last?
Most last at least eight years based on European data. Individual results can vary, and retreatment may be necessary.
Are results seen immediately?
Yes, patients experience immediate improvement.
