ATLANTA, Ga. — Georgia Urology announced today that Dr. Brent Sharpe performed his 100th NanoKnife® System case on December 22, a milestone that underscored the practice’s leadership and deep clinical experience using irreversible electroporation (IRE) for men with localized prostate cancer.
Dr. Sharpe, a board-certified urologist with Georgia Urology and one of the most experienced NanoKnife users in the country, helped expand access to a minimally invasive, targeted option designed to destroy cancerous cells while preserving surrounding structures—an approach that may have reduced the risk of life-altering side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
“Reaching 100 cases reflected both the demand for prostate cancer care that protects quality of life and our team’s commitment to delivering it safely and thoughtfully,” said Dr. Sharpe. “NanoKnife offered a targeted, tissue-sparing approach that helped preserve what matters most to patients.”
Clinical outcomes continued to build momentum. Recent data from the PRESERVE study, a multi-center U.S. trial, reported promising results, including 1% incontinence, approximately 10% erectile dysfunction, and 84% of patients with no in-field recurrence following treatment.
One such patient, 81-year-old Ted Sawyer of Houston County, Georgia, credited NanoKnife and Dr. Sharpe for helping him return quickly to daily life without the lasting side effects that can come with surgery or radiation. “I had no incontinence, no erectile dysfunction, and was back at work in a week,” Sawyer said. Unlike traditional treatments such as radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy, NanoKnife was non-thermal and may have been especially useful for treating tumors close to sensitive structures like nerves or blood vessels. The NanoKnife System was FDA-cleared for the ablation of prostate tissue and was set to be assigned a CPT Category I code beginning January 2026, an important step toward broader access.
Georgia Urology’s milestone also coincided with growing national visibility for the underlying technology: the approach was recently honored by TIME as one of the Best Inventions of 2025, further spotlighting the growing momentum behind tissue-sparing cancer treatment options.
